Open tender will
protect integrity
KUALA LUMPUR: Transparency International-Malaysia (TI
Malaysia) has called on the Government to award all
tenders in a transparent manner to protect the integrity
of the country.
Its president Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam said he wished
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had
addressed the question of tendering in greater detail
when he spoke of it in Parliament on Wednesday.
Navaratnam said the tendering for government and even
private contracts could be a major source of corruption
if the procedure was not transparent enough.
“The Prime Minister has said 38% of the value of
Government contracts now would not be subject
to open tender but would be awarded on the basis of
direct negotiations.
“Even if it is government policy to protect local
contractors and to give them more experience, there can
be arrangements made on multi-racial grounds to ensure
that the big and the small contractors are adequately
catered for by instituting collaborative arrangements,”
he said.
