ACA to study other nations’
asset declaration models
KUCHING: The Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) will look at
various models of asset declaration in other countries
to come out with a new form for ministers and deputy
ministers to declare their assets, as announced earlier.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said he
had directed ACA to find out the practice of asset
declaration in other countries to ensure Malaysia could
come up with a proper way of doing it.
“We certainly want to ensure that whatever we do is
going to be good. ACA is now making contact with various
places and we should look into what Hong Kong,
Singapore, Britain and Australia are doing.
“They can give us suggestions as to what is
appropriate,” he told a press conference after meeting
Barisan Nasional elected representatives from Sarawak
yesterday.
Abdullah said the ACA had also met with Transparency
International-Malaysia and other parties on the matter.
It was reported last month that Abdullah had called on
all ministers and deputy ministers to declare their
assets, saying that it was important for them to do so.
On calls that he should step down, the Prime Minister
said he would stay on to continue the battle against
poverty and to make sure that the people benefit from
the economy.
He said a recent survey, tabled at the last Cabinet
meeting, showed that poverty had been reduced from 5.3%
to 3.7% while hardcore poverty had dropped to 0.7%.
On the Gua Musang Umno special delegates’ meeting
yesterday, Abdullah said people were free to make
proposals as long as they abided by the party’s rules
and regulations.
“If these matters are brought up in the supreme council
we will discuss them. There is no reason for us to
dismiss them,” he added.
