Group: ACA checks will boost
public’s faith in Govt
PETALING JAYA: The move to seek the Anti-Corruption
Agency’s clearance to ensure Barisan Nasional’s
candidates were “clean” will boost the people’s faith
towards the Government’s integrity, said Tan Sri Ramon
Navaratnam.
The Transparency International Malaysia president said
the country’s economic development would strengthen as
the Government’s integrity improved.
“The public’s confidence in the electoral system will
strengthen. There will be less recourse to demonstration
if the public is convinced there are true democratic
aspirations fulfilled by the privilege to vote,” he
said.
Navaratnam was commenting on Deputy Prime Minister Datuk
Seri Najib Tun Razak’s remark that the Government would
seek ACA’s clearance for Barisan’s candidates picked to
contest in the coming general election to ensure they
were “clean.”
Navaratnam said the people would be encouraged to know
that the candidates had been scrutinised for integrity
by the ACA.
He said otherwise, the country’s democracy would not
mature and improve as fast as it should.
