Informers should get better protection

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians want better protection for whistle blowers, according to a survey which found that problems of integrity and transparency are "acute and serious."

The respondents would like to see the formation of an ombudsman on corruption and the Anti-Corruption Agency reporting directly to Parliament.

The inaugural Malaysian Transparency Perception Survey 2007 showed that the respondents largely trusted the Government's efforts to improve integrity and transparency despite having their own experiences with corruption.

The survey was initiated by the Malaysian chapter of Berlin-based Transparency International (TI) and conducted by local opinion research firm Merdeka Centre for Opinion Research,

The respondents involved 1,025 members of the public and 411 from the corporate side.

Centre director Ibrahim Suffian said among the government agencies perceived with having the lowest integrity and transparency values were the police, Road Transport Department, Customs Department and the Land Office.

On the private sector, the public gave construction, financial services and transportation sectors the lowest marks.
