Where is Accountability in the alleged E-Waste Consignment Release by DOE Officers? TI-Malaysia asks

Press Releases

Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) is deeply concerned about the recent allegations involving Department of Environment (DOE) officers who reportedly attempted to release e-waste consignments at Port Klang. Such actions, if proven true, represent a severe breach of public trust and undermine the integrity of our environmental regulations.

We urge the Director of the DOE to provide a full and transparent explanation regarding this incident. Should the allegations be substantiated, we call on the government to take firm disciplinary action against the civil servants involved in this serious incident. It is imperative that those entrusted with the enforcement of our environmental laws are held to the highest standards of accountability and integrity. According to the reported statements made by EAIC, DOE failed to act on the leaked information and that investigations into the e-waste consignments were delayed.

Cases like this are what severely compromises Malaysia's efforts to combat corruption and improve its standing in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI). Malaysia's CPI score had shown some improvement in 2023, but such setbacks highlight the ongoing challenges we face in eradicating corruption. Without decisive action, our progress will remain hindered, and public confidence in our institutions will continue to erode, said Dr Muhammad Mohan, president TI-Malaysia.

We call on all relevant authorities to ensure that justice is served and that measures are put in place to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
