Transparency International – Malaysia (TI-M) welcomes and is encouraged by the formation of a 30- member task force by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate alleged corruption related to the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) fiasco. This is, indeed, an overdue and essentially additional to other positive steps that have been taken thus far.
The government must recover taxpayers’ money that may have been corruptly, illegally or improperly paid, and bring the wrongdoers to book. The government must also institute systems, procedures and oversight to ensure that there are no further abuses of power or misuse of public funds by those who have been entrusted with power.
This is an excellent opportunity for MACC to rebuild its reputation, and TI-M wishes to remind MACC to act vigorously, thoroughly and impartially without fear or favour, including investigating the assets of the relevant individuals.
TI-M therefore urges MACC not to leave any stone unturned in its investigations not only in the PKFZ fiasco but also several other ongoing investigations, and to show the public that MACC is committed to integrity, transparency and justice.
