The Reopening of the Teoh Beng Hock Case

Press Releases

PRESS STATEMENT – September 13, 2014, Kuala Lumpur: It has been reported that Bukit Aman will reopen the Teoh Beng Hock case, follow the Court of Appeal’s judgment in setting aside the coroner’s open verdict in the inquest on the case.

The Police have given an assurance that they will conduct an in-depth study, professional, fair investigations and see whether they need to reclassify the case under Section 302.

In this regard, Transparency International-Malaysia (TI-M) lauds the setting up of a special investigation team led by a Deputy Federal CID Director to conduct investigations without bias and resolve the matter in a fair manner.

TI-M further added that the investigative team be given the full mandate in the matter and that there should be no any interference including in the conducting of the investigation by the police.

President of TI-M, Dato’ Akhbar Satar also welcomes the MACC’s stand that it will provide its fullest cooperation to the police and the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

TI-M leaves the case to the accountability, transparency, justice and professionalism of the police to handle this sensitive case. However, those responsible for the death of Teoh Beng Hock in 2009 should be charged if police investigation produces sufficient circumstantial evidence.

TI-M also want all parties involved in this case to be given due process to have justice and also to bring a closure.

End.
