Chris Toh, 22, University of Leeds (July-September 2013)

In the summer of 2013, I spent 2 months as an intern with the Forest Governance Initiative (FGI) of Transparency International Malaysia. The choice I made to intern with TI-M was probably one of the better decisions in my life. In just 2 short months, I learnt a lot about the organisation’s work in battling corruption within the forestry sector. I was given the opportunity to participate in many of FGI’s core initiatives including the development and management of the Forest Watch Programme. When the Forest Watch Mobile Application was launched, I too was given a chance to be involved in its launching and demonstration via public awareness events. The Executive committee member of FGI, Dr. Pola Singh was very insistent in ensuring that interns would have some tangible ‘takeaway’ from their time at TI-M and I am happy to say that it was the same for me. With some help and guidance, my article titled ‘Corruption in Malaysia and the Malaysian Forestry Sector’ was published in Volume 25 (April – September 2013) of the TI-M Newsletter. I could not have been more satisfied with my experience as an intern at TI-M and I would urge other graduates/university students to get the most that they can out of an internship with the organization.

Mathilde Tarif, 21, Sciences Po Paris (February-May 2014)

Mathilde Tarif was on a one-year student exchange program with Monash University Malaysia.

As a student in international affairs, working with TI-M was a great opportunity for me. My work consisted in writing some reports and analysis about various issues such as corruption in the defense sector in Malaysia. I also assisted in the drafting of annual reports. My experience in TI-M was short but meaningful and very rewarding!

Gizem Varol (September 2015 – December 2015)

After three years working as an Office Manager and afterwards completing a Bachelor Studies in Banking and Finance in Germany, Gizem decided to set a new focus for my Master’s. She is currently enrolled in the Master’s Programme in Development and International Relations at the Aalborg University in Denmark. A three months internship is a compulsory part of her studies and she decided to join Transparency International – Malaysia as an intern in September 2015. Gizem hopes to support TI-M with her University education and previous work experience.

Janis Daniel (October 2015 – May 2016)

After completing his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science at the University of Vienna (Austria) in 2012, Janis decided to put the focus of his Master’s Degree on Public International Law. He subsequently enrolled in a study programme called International Politics and Public International Law at the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel (Germany), in the course of which he was regularly exposed to matters pertaining to corruption. Just recently, Janis submitted his thesis on the theoretic foundations of anti-discrimination law. Over the time of his studies, he gained valuable experiences in organising student’s soccer leagues for the course of several seasons. Janis also spent an ecological gap year at EUROPARC Deutschland – one of Germany’s biggest environmental NGOs, where he worked as project manager. Drawing on those experiences, Janis joined Transparency International Malaysia within the framework of the Carlo-Schmid-Fellowship programme to implement projects related to youth engagement. Janis hopes to be able to bring innovative ideas to TI-M as well as to undergo unique experiences in a new and challenging working environment during his seven months stint.

Maaz Ali (March 2016 – June 2016)

Currently pursuing his bachelor degree in Business and Knowledge Management at Multimedia University Melaka and Bachelor of Business and Quality Management at Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University Dubai, Maaz is active member of Emirates Red Crescent Society, previously volunteered and participated in events in spreading health awareness and education within the Emirates and neighbouring countries. Drawing on those experiences Maaz joined TI-Malaysia to support the team with the projects and to complete his three-month compulsory internship as a part of his studies. Maaz hopes to be able to bring innovative ideas to TI-Malaysia as well as to undergo unique experiences in a new and challenging working environment during his three month stint.

Tashaa Devarajoo ( May 2016- August 2016 )

Tashaa a second year student of HELP University who currently pursuing her studies in Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. In completion of her degree, a three month Internship is compulsory and she joined Transparency International-Malaysia as an intern to fulfill the requirement. Besides being involved with the organizing of the Defence Workshop that would be held in August 2016, Tashaa is focusing on developing anti-corruption activities for the youth under TI-M’s Youth Initiative. Tashaa hopes to learn more about the corruption and governance and deliver the best during her three month-internship in TI-Malaysia.

Maya Banks (July-October 2016)

Maya graduated last year from University of California, Berkeley with a bachelor’s degree in Political Economy, with a focus on Chinese Political Economics. While at university, she completed a few internships in public relations and business administration, and also aided a PHD student with her research on Ghanaian fisheries for over a year and a half. After graduation, she worked as an accountant for a venture capital firm for nearly a year. Maya has chosen to join Transparency International Malaysia for a three month internship stint beginning in July 2016. She is excited to utilize her past experiences to aid TI-M, learn new skills, and to be a part of making a difference in the Malaysian anti-corruption campaign.

Dana Coleby (March-June 2017)

Dana has finished her Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology and her Global Master of Arts in International Relations. She is pursuing a career in international development and hopes that working with TI-M will give her some insights into this field. Dana has strong interests in human rights and equality. She hopes that during her time here with TI-M she can learn new skills to apply to her career and bring forth a change, in some small way.
