The GIAT (Governance, Integrity, Accountability and Transparency) coalition was initiated by TI-M and is joined by the Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4), Institute of Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS), Friends of Kota Damansara (FOKD) and Sinar Project. The coalition was formed in December 2014.
The Coalition was formed with its vision of ‘A transparent, open and corruption free Malaysia’. The mission of the coalition is to promote and advocate for transparency, integrity, accountability and good governance in Malaysia and raise awareness on issues pertaining to corruption.
The focus area of GIAT is to;
MACC Reform
TI-M along with allies C4, IDEAS and the Bar Council, have been calling on for the reformation of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). Its independence and the segregation of powers could be enhanced for further effectiveness in investigations and prosecution; and also to gain the trust and confidence of the public.
The key areas of concern for the coalition is the;
1. Independent appointment of the MACC Chief Commissioner
2. The separation of power between the Attorney Generals’s (AG’s) Office and the Public Prosecutor
3. Enhancement to the Official Secrets Act and the Whistleblower Protection Act
