Immediate investigation into allegations of corruption in the National Sports Council

Press Releases

Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) calls for immediate investigation into allegations of corruption in the National Sports Council by former national gymnastics coach.

Transparency International – Malaysia (TI-M) views with much concern the allegations made by Ms. Yap Yee Yin, a former coach for the national gymnastics team, regarding malpractice in the overpayment of her salaries amounting to RM18,200.

If Yap Yee Yin’s account is true and accurate, TI-M would salute and commend her honesty and courage in coming forth with the matter and we would like to consider publicly recognizing her for her sense of integrity, transparency and accountability at the appropriate time. Indeed if we had more individuals who are open and honest, we would be able to combat corruption more effectively!

The matters of concern surrounding the allegations include her claim that a third party agent had suspiciously advised her to keep half of the money and the alleged lack of action to stop the payment until after she had lodged a report directly with the Sports Minister. The National Sports Council should explain the role of the person who apparently represented himself as an ‘agent’ of the NSC. The matter should be investigated and if there was misrepresentation, action must be taken against the ‘agent’ concern and any other party with dealings in the matter.

In this connection, the establishment of Institut Integriti Malaysia (IIM) and the formulation of the National Integrity Plan (NIP) represents a strong framework within which all sectors in Malaysia, whether public or private sectors, should work together to towards a nation of integrity and transparency that is free of corruption in all spheres of Malaysian life.

TI-M recognizes that there has been continuous effort to deal with “administrative corruption” in the public sector. In keeping with this, The National Sports Council should reevaluate their processes and policies to ensure compliance with NIP principles as these recent allegations may point to administrative lapses and administrative ineffective procedures.
