Press Statement, Oct 28 2014 – Transparency International – Malaysia (TI-M) today urges the IGP, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar to implement a policy of transferring police officers on a rotational basis to different districts as a means to combat corruption amongst its ranks.
The President of TI-M, Dato’ Akhbar Satar suggested to the Polis DiRaja Malaysia (PDRM) to consider the implementation of a location rotation system for all its officers. The PDRM, according to Dato’ Akhbar, needs to be firm in duly enforcing the rotation system in a timely manner.
The need for such urgent action was heightened with the international global coalition against corruption expressing its concern on the integrity and reputation of the PDRM as indicated in the recent Global Corruption Barometer, whereby the police force and political institutions were regarded as the most corrupt institutions in Malaysia.
On a separate note TI-M President, Akhbar applauded the call by the IGP to his officers to immediately eradicate the illegal gambling outlets in the country. According to an online news portal, the IGP gave the officers and members of the PDRM one week, to stop the illegal gambling joints in the country. The order clearly elucidates that the police head honcho is firm and determined to wholly eradicate illegal gambling in the country. Such action however needs to be done holistically, effectively and in a continuous manner.
Dato’ Akhbar nevertheless emphasized that the stern request by the IGP would lead to naught if the problem persists and urged that the location rotation process be implemented as soon as possible. For a start the police officers that had not taken action against the illegal gambling dens, prior to the IGP’s decree, should be transferred.
TI-M urged that PDRM double its efforts in strengthening integrity amongst members of the force. In addition to the illegal gambling dens and just as important, all Malaysian citizens want to know what IGP is doing to wipe out the systemic and syndicated corruption in the police force. Only drastic actions, clean-ups and the removal of “rotten apples” in the police force will the restoration of public confidence in an honest and corruption-free police force is the only acceptable response to the IGP’s call for action.
