Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) supports the pledge from the Chief Commissioner Datuk Dzulkifli Ahmad, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)’s to the new Chief Justice of Malaysia, The Right Honourable Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Md Raus Sharif, to assist the Chief Justice to lead the judiciary towards excellence and ensure that the judiciary will be free from corruption.
Corruption is undermining judicial systems around the world by denying citizens access to justice and the basic human right to a fair and impartial trial. The latest Global Corruption Barometer (GCB) released in February this year shows that 33% of the respondents from Malaysia think that judges and magistrates are involved in corruption. This is an alarming indication in terms of public opinion. TI-M hopes that with the new judicial appointments for the new Chief Justice of Malaysia, President of the Appeals Court and Chief Judge of Malaya the fight against graft in Malaysia will continue and widespread corruption will be a thing of the past for Malaysia.
TI-M will work continue to work closely with government agencies and the public to this end and act as a civil society watchdog, holding all policy makers and implementers to account and ensuring that they live up to their anti-corruption commitments.
