Reforming Political Financing in Malaysia: Northern Region Workshop (Penang)
Reforming Political Financing

A workshop was held on 9 October 2010 at the Traders Hotel, Penang. The workshop was organised with the support from KAS and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The workshop was aimed at mobilising support from the public in the northern region for TI-M’s effort in reforming political financing in Malaysia. Additionally, TI-M wished to raise public awareness on the subject matter and its detrimental effects to society as a whole. Public support is essential and vital for TI-M’s effort to achieve a sustained and systematic reform on political financing which focuses on long term goals that could yield great benefits to the society.

The workshop comprised two sessions, with the first being a forum discussion, while the second session was a presentation of TI-M’s research and effort in political financing in Malaysia. The panelists for the forum were Y.A.B Lim Guan Eng, Chief Minister of Penang and Datuk Wira Haji Wan Ahmad Wan Omar, Deputy Chairman of Election Commission of Malaysia (EC). The forum was moderated by Datuk Paul Low. The first session finished at 11am.

The second session of the workshop resumed at 11.30am with a presentation by Datuk Paul Low on TI-M’s research and effort in reforming political financing in Malaysia. Participants were then invited to voice their comments and doubts on TI-M’s efforts thus far. Majority of the participants echoed and supported TI-M’s efforts, as well as urging TI-M to undertake the lead role in electoral reform. The event ended with closing remarks from Datuk Paul Low.

The workshop was well attended with a total of 51 participants from various sectors. They included Members of Parliament, members of the Penang State Legislative, representatives from local governments, academia, professional bodies, corporate, civil society, media and members of the public.
